The Smart Card Operating System for Transport Application (SCOSTA) is the operating system standard that was developed in 2002 for contact smart cards on the request of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The standards are absolutely generic and are deployment-ready for all kinds of Identity applications like Driving License/Registration Card(DL/RC), Citizen ePassport, ID card, PDS card, RSBY Card, etc. The SCOSTA operating system for Smart Cards was developed in a dedicated and collaborative effort of NIC, IIT Kanpur  and the Smart Card industry. It is based on ISO-7816 standards and therefore, complies with any international requirements. As on date, more than thirty major national and international industry players have adopted these standards into their Smart Card products and are selling in the national and international market. Subsequently, SCOSTA-CL was developed in the year 2007 as per ISO 7816/ICAO/MRTD 9303 standards. The SCOSTA-CL (Contactless) cards were used in the issuance of e-passports of officials/diplomats as a pilot project.

Original MIFARE Classic with 1K memory offers 1,024 bytes of data storage, split into 16 sectors; each sector is protected by two different keys, called A and B. Each key can be programmed to allow operations such as reading, writing, increasing value blocks, etc.

RFID cards are thus laminated plastic cards made of PVC, which are equipped with a radio frequency antenna or smart card inlay inside and can be written and read contactlessly by an RFID reader.

Original MIFARE DESFire EV1 is based on open global standards for both air interface and cryptographic methods. It is compliant to all 4 levels of ISO/IEC 14443A and uses optional ISO/IEC 7816-4 commands. Featuring an on-chip backup management system and the mutual three-pass authentication, a MIFARE DESFire EV1 card can hold up to 28 different applications and 32 files per application.

HID proximity cards are door access ID cards that use radio frequency to communicate with HID proximity card readers123. They are compatible with all HID proximity card readers and have consistent read range regardless of environmental conditions2. They can be printable or non-printable, PVC or composite, and have different bit formats and card numbers124. NTAG Original 213, NTAG 215, and NTAG 216 have been developed by NXP® Semiconductors as standard NFC tag ICs to be used in mass-market applications such as retail, gaming, and consumer electronics, in combination with NFC devices or NFC-compliant Proximity Coupling Devices. NTAG 213, NTAG 215, and NTAG 216 (from now on, generally called NTAG 21x) are designed to fully comply to NFC Forum Type 2 Tag and ISO/IEC14443 Type A specifications.

Target applications include Out-of-Home and print media smart advertisement, SoLoMo applications, product authentication, NFC shelf labels, and mobile companion tags.

Target use cases include Out-of-Home smart advertisement, product authentication, mobile companion tags, Bluetooth® or Wi-Fi pairing, electronic shelf labels, and business cards. NTAG 21x memory can also be segmented to implement multiple applications at the same time.

Thanks to the high input capacitance, NTAG 21x tag ICs are particularly tailored for applications requiring small footprints, without compromise on performance. Small NFC tags can be more easily embedded into, e.g., product labels or electronic devices.

The mechanical and electrical specifications of NTAG 21x are tailored to meet the requirements of inlay and tag manufacturers.

Contactless energy and data transfer

Communication to NTAG 21x can be established only when the IC is connected to an antenna.

When NTAG 21x is positioned in the RF field, the high-speed RF communication interface allows the transmission of the data with a baud rate of 106 kbit/s.

Simple deployment and user convenience

NTAG 21x offers specific features designed to improve integration and user convenience:

• The fast read capability allows scanning the complete NDEF message with only one FAST_READ command, thus reducing the overhead in high throughput production environments
• The improved RF performance allows for more flexibility in the choice of shape, dimension, and materials
• The option for 75 μm IC thickness enables the manufacturing of ultrathin tags, for a more convenient integration in, e.g., magazines or gaming cards
